How much is the copper worth in a roll of Wheat Cents?

A penny weighs 3.11 grams.  Composition 95% Copper, .050% Tin and Zinc.  Actual Copper content 2.95 grams. 

3.11 grams = 0.1097 ounce  or  0.00685 pound 

146 cents = 1 pound,  about 9 cents (coins) per ounce

Thus, about three rolls of wheat cents make a pound. One roll is 5.48 ounces. 

Precisely 5.20 ounces of copper in a roll  (5.48 x .95) not accounting for wear on the coins.

At this writing the price of copper is  $3.16 per pound (see chart at left). 

On cent is worth 0.0205 (0.0065 x 3.16)

A roll of wheat cents is worth about 1.02  (.325 x $3.16=1.027)

How much is the nickel worth in a roll of Jefferson Nickels?

To begin, there is actually a lot more copper in the composition: 75%  copper  25% nickel

Weight of coin: 5 grams=  3.75 grams copper, 1.25 grams nickel

Copper: 3.75 grams= 0.1322 ounce or 0.008 pound
Nickel: 1.25 grams= 0.044 ounce or 0.00275 pound

At this writing Nickel is worth $20.10 per pound (see updated price to left)

0.00275 x 20.10 =5.52 cents / One Roll =$2.21  not accounting for wear on the coins.

Add the copper: 0.008 x 2.67 (price of copper) =0.021

As of 3-4-2007 your nickel is worth 7.6 cents! A roll is worth $3.05!
